One region, two very different water stories
Northwest Arkansas is unusual in that a large share of its population drinks treated surface water from a single reservoir, while a large share of its land area is on private wells drawing from Ozark groundwater. Those two situations produce almost opposite complaints.
In the Beaver Lake cities — Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, Bentonville and their neighbours — the water arrives already filtered and disinfected. What people notice is the disinfectant: a chlorine or pool-like taste and smell, strongest in summer. Classic scale problems are less common on this supply than they would be in a groundwater city.
Out on private wells in Madison, Carroll and the rural edges of Benton and Washington counties, the picture reverses. Groundwater moving through Ozark limestone picks up dissolved minerals, so hardness, iron and manganese staining and sulfur odours are all realistic possibilities. So are things you cannot detect at all without a laboratory: bacteria and nitrate.

Two houses on the same street can need different equipment, and two wells a mile apart in Madison County can test nothing alike. The honest answer to “what will it cost?” starts with “what does your water actually do?” That is what the test is for.
