Chlorine and Chloramine Filtration in Northwest Arkansas

What this service is
Public water systems must maintain a disinfectant residual to the tap. Most use one of two: free chlorine, or chloramine, which is chlorine combined with ammonia and is more stable over long distribution runs.
Both are doing a necessary job. Both can be reduced for taste and odour. But chloramine is considerably harder to remove, and equipment that handles chlorine easily may barely touch it.
The answer is free: your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report states which disinfectant is used. Every community water system in Arkansas publishes one.

How the technology works
Free chlorine
Standard activated carbon reduces free chlorine readily. The reaction is fast, so modest contact time is sufficient, and even a small point-of-use cartridge performs well.
Chloramine
Chloramine is a more stable molecule and reacts with carbon much more slowly. Two things change as a result:
- Catalytic carbon is normally required. It is treated to enhance the surface reactions that break chloramine down.
- Contact time must be considerably longer, which in practice means a larger media volume and a lower service flow rate for the same household.
A whole-house carbon tank sized correctly for free chlorine can be substantially undersized for chloramine. This is why 'I already have a carbon filter and I can still smell it' is such a common complaint.
Why it matters beyond taste
Chloramine is toxic to fish and must be neutralised for aquariums, and it passes through some treatments that handle chlorine easily. It also degrades certain rubber and elastomer plumbing components faster than free chlorine does.

Why the right system depends on your actual water
Which disinfectant your system uses decides the media type and the sizing, and it is a fact about your utility rather than about your house.
This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

Understand the symptom
What you are noticing, where, since when, and whether it affects one fixture or the whole building. This alone rules a great deal in or out.
Test the water
Measurements taken at your property. Where the question involves bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, that means certified laboratory analysis rather than a field kit, because those cannot be measured reliably in a kitchen.
Check the practical constraints
Available space, incoming pipe size, water pressure, a drain for backwash or reject water where the technology needs one, power, and how many fixtures might run at once. These decide what will physically work.

Installation
NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.
We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.
Whole-house carbon for chloramine needs a larger tank than the same household would need for chlorine, plus a drain if the unit backwashes. Sediment pre-filtration protects the media.
Permits and code
Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.
Maintenance and replacement schedule
Carbon exhausts silently. On chloramine the media works harder, so replacement intervals are typically shorter than the same unit would need on free chlorine.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.
Certifications and performance claims
NSF/ANSI 42 covers chlorine taste and odour reduction. Note that chloramine reduction is a separate claim — a product certified for chlorine reduction has not demonstrated chloramine performance.
If you are on chloramine, ask specifically whether the product is certified for chloramine reduction, and at what flow rate. Performance claims are made at a stated service flow, and exceeding it invalidates them in practice even though nobody will tell you.
How we handle contaminant-reduction claims
We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.
Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

How do I find out if my water has chloramine?
Your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report states the disinfectant used. It is published every year and is normally on the utility's website. Testing at the tap can also distinguish free from total chlorine.
Why did my carbon filter not fix the smell?
The most common reason is chloramine treated with a system sized for free chlorine. The second most common is an exhausted cartridge. The third is a system undersized for the flow rate, so contact time is too short.
Does a shower filter work for chloramine?
Poorly, in general. There is very little media and very little contact time in a shower head, and chloramine needs a great deal of both. Some shower filters are certified under NSF/ANSI 177 for free chlorine reduction; that is a different and easier claim.
Will removing chlorine make my water unsafe?
Water leaving a filter has no disinfectant residual, which is why maintaining the equipment matters and why point-of-use filters should be replaced on schedule. For most households this is not a practical concern; for immunocompromised individuals it is worth discussing with a physician.
