What this service is
A salt-based softener removes calcium and magnesium from water by exchanging them for sodium on a bed of resin, then periodically regenerating that resin with brine made from salt you add to a tank.

How the technology works
The mechanism is covered on the softener installation page. What matters here is the honest accounting.
What it genuinely delivers
Hardness minerals are removed from the water. Not altered, not suspended, not conditioned — removed. That is why softened water lathers, why scale stops forming, and why laundry and glassware change noticeably. It is the only household technology in common use that does this.
What it costs you
- Salt. An ongoing consumable you have to buy and carry.
- Water. Regeneration uses water to flush the resin, and it goes to drain.
- Sodium in the water. Proportional to the hardness removed. Not a taste issue at normal levels, but a genuine consideration on a sodium-restricted diet.
- Brine discharge. Goes to sewer or septic. Some jurisdictions regulate this, and it is worth asking about locally.
- Space. Two tanks, plus room to manoeuvre salt bags.
The efficiency question
Most of the salt and water waste attributed to softeners comes from poor programming rather than from the technology. A timer valve regenerating on a fixed schedule regardless of use, set to factory defaults, will use substantially more salt than a metered valve programmed to actual hardness and household size. The difference is large enough that we consider programming part of the installation rather than an optional extra.

Why the right system depends on your actual water
The size, the valve type and the settings all come from your measured hardness and your household's actual water use.
This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

Installation
NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.
We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.

Permits and code
Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.
Certifications and performance claims
NSF/ANSI 44 is the standard for cation exchange softeners, covering hardness reduction, material safety and structural integrity. Some units carry additional certification for barium and radium reduction under the same standard. NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 apply to materials and lead content in components.
Certification under NSF/ANSI 44 says nothing about any contaminant other than those named in the listing.
How we handle contaminant-reduction claims
We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.
Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:
- Resin volume, driven by hardness and household size
- Metered versus timer control valve
- Single-tank versus twin-tank configuration
- Cabinet versus separate tanks, which affects footprint
- Pre-treatment needed ahead of the softener, such as an iron filter
- Plumbing, drain and electrical work at the location
- Ongoing salt cost over the life of the unit
Frequently asked questions
Salt-based or salt-free — which is better?
They do different things, so 'better' depends on your goal. Salt-based removes hardness minerals: soap lathers, scale stops forming, water feels different. Salt-free conditioning changes how minerals behave so they are less inclined to stick, which reduces new scale in many installations, but the minerals are still in the water, so soap behaves the same and water feels the same. If lathering and feel matter to you, conditioning will disappoint.
How much water does regeneration use?
It varies with resin volume and how the valve is programmed, so we would rather calculate it for your specific configuration than quote a figure. Metered valves programmed to actual hardness use significantly less than timer valves on defaults.
Is the sodium in softened water a health concern?
The amount is proportional to the hardness removed and is small at typical household hardness. For most people it is not a consideration. If someone in your household is on a medically restricted sodium intake, discuss it with their doctor, and note that potassium chloride can be substituted or the kitchen cold tap left unsoftened.
Can I use a softener with a septic system?
Research on softener discharge and septic performance has generally not found significant harm, but local rules vary and some jurisdictions restrict it. Efficient programming reduces the discharge volume. Check local requirements before installing.
What kind of salt should I use?
Follow the manufacturer's recommendation. Higher-purity salt leaves less residue in the brine tank and means less frequent cleaning. Cheaper rock salt generally costs more in maintenance than it saves at the till.
