Nitrates in Well Water in Northwest Arkansas
Nitrate is invisible, tasteless and odourless in water. It matters particularly for one group of people, and that specificity is why we treat it as a priority test rather than an optional extra on any rural well.
Northwest Arkansas has substantial agricultural activity, including poultry production, alongside a large number of private wells and septic systems. Those are exactly the conditions under which nitrate testing is worth doing.
Common symptoms
People describe this problem to us in these ways. You may recognise several, or only one.
- None in the water itself — no taste, colour or smell
- The concerning sign is in people, not water: bluish skin colouring in an infant is a medical emergency requiring immediate care
- Risk indicators: a shallow well, agricultural land nearby, a septic system, a well downhill from a livestock area
Potential causes
Fertiliser applied to farmland
Nitrogen fertiliser that is not taken up by crops can leach into groundwater.
Animal waste and land application
Manure and litter applied to land as fertiliser is a recognised nitrate source in agricultural regions.
Septic systems
Household wastewater is nitrogen-rich. A failing septic system, or one too close to a well, is a common cause.
Shallow wells
Depth matters. Shallow wells are considerably more exposed to surface activity than deep ones.
Karst geology
Rapid movement through fractured limestone gives less opportunity for natural attenuation.
This one requires testing to confirm
Laboratory testing. The EPA maximum contaminant level for nitrate in public drinking water is 10 mg/L measured as nitrogen, and that limit was set specifically to protect infants.
Nitrate belongs on the annual test list for any private well, alongside total coliform bacteria — and it is genuinely urgent rather than routine if there is an infant in the household, if someone is pregnant, or if you are preparing formula with well water.
Nitrate levels can change seasonally, rising after fertiliser application and after heavy rainfall. A single clean result in midwinter does not guarantee the same result in spring, which is an argument for consistent annual testing at a similar time of year.

Two things that do not work
Boiling makes nitrate worse. Water evaporates and nitrate does not, so boiling concentrates it. This is the opposite of the correct response to bacteria, which is why knowing which problem you have matters.
Standard filtration does not touch it. Sediment filters, carbon filters and water softeners are not nitrate technologies. Nitrate reduction requires reverse osmosis, ion exchange designed for nitrate, or distillation.
If there is an infant in the house
Infants under six months are vulnerable to methaemoglobinaemia, sometimes called blue baby syndrome, from nitrate in drinking water. If you use well water to prepare formula and have not tested for nitrate, test it. Until you have a result, use an alternative source for formula — and do not boil the well water in the belief it will help. Any health question belongs with your paediatrician.

How often should I test for nitrate?
Annually for any private well, and more often where there is an infant in the household, a shallow well, or nearby agricultural activity. Testing at a similar time each year makes results comparable.
Does a water softener remove nitrate?
No. A standard softener is designed for hardness and does not address nitrate.
Can I taste or smell nitrate?
No, at any level. That is exactly why it is a priority test rather than something you wait to notice.
My well tested fine last year. Do I still need to test?
Yes. Nitrate varies with rainfall, fertiliser application and seasonal conditions. A clean result tells you about the day it was taken.
Is nitrate a problem for adults?
The drinking-water standard is set to protect the most vulnerable group, which is infants. Questions about what a particular level means for anyone in your household are for a physician, not for us.
