What this service is
An under-sink system treats water at one fixture. It sits in the cabinet and feeds either a dedicated drinking-water faucet or, in some configurations, the existing cold tap.
The category covers two quite different technologies. Carbon block filters handle chlorine, taste, odour and — where certified — specific health contaminants such as lead and cysts, while leaving minerals in place. Reverse osmosis removes a much broader range of dissolved substances but is more complex, produces wastewater, and needs a storage tank.
Which one is right depends on what you are trying to remove, which depends on a test.

How the technology works
Carbon block systems
Water passes through one or more compressed carbon cartridges. Contact efficiency is high, and the solid block also strains particles down to its rated micron size, which is how some blocks achieve cyst reduction certification. Minerals stay in the water. No wastewater, no storage tank, no electricity, and full flow at the tap.
Reverse osmosis systems
Covered in detail on its own page. More thorough, more complex, produces wastewater, needs a tank.
Choosing between them
The honest rule of thumb: if your complaint is taste, odour and chlorine, a good carbon block is simpler, cheaper and entirely sufficient. If testing has confirmed a dissolved contaminant such as nitrate, arsenic or fluoride, carbon will not help and RO is the appropriate technology. For lead and PFAS, both can work — but only where the specific model carries the certification naming that contaminant.

Why the right system depends on your actual water
A carbon block and an RO system look similar under a sink and do very different things, so the choice should follow your test rather than the price list.
This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

Test the water
Measurements taken at your property. Where the question involves bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, that means certified laboratory analysis rather than a field kit, because those cannot be measured reliably in a kitchen.
Check the practical constraints
Available space, incoming pipe size, water pressure, a drain for backwash or reject water where the technology needs one, power, and how many fixtures might run at once. These decide what will physically work.

Installation
NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.
We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.
Installation involves a connection to the cold supply under the sink, mounting the unit, and usually drilling the worktop or sink for a dedicated faucet. RO additionally needs a drain connection with an air gap and space for the storage tank.
Permits and code
Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.
Maintenance and replacement schedule
Cartridges have a rated capacity in gallons and a time limit, and whichever comes first is the one to act on. An exhausted cartridge is not a neutral filter — it can be worse than none.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.
Certifications and performance claims
This is where certification matters most, because the claims differ enormously between products that look identical.
NSF/ANSI 42 — aesthetic effects only: chlorine, taste, odour, particulate. Makes no health claim.
NSF/ANSI 53 — health effects: lead, cysts, VOCs, and for some products PFOA and PFOS. Each claim is separately tested and listed.
NSF/ANSI 58 — reverse osmosis systems.
NSF/ANSI 401 — incidental compounds including certain pharmaceuticals and pesticides.
A filter certified under 42 alone is a taste filter. If you need lead reduction, the listing must say lead. This is the single most useful question you can ask any filter salesperson.
How we handle contaminant-reduction claims
We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.
Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

Frequently asked questions
Carbon block or reverse osmosis?
For chlorine taste and odour, carbon block — simpler, cheaper, no wastewater, keeps minerals. For a confirmed dissolved contaminant like nitrate, arsenic or fluoride, RO, because carbon does not address them. Test first and the answer is usually obvious.
Do I need a separate faucet?
Most systems use one, which keeps filter capacity for drinking water rather than spending it on washing up. Some carbon systems can feed the main cold tap, at the cost of much shorter cartridge life.
Can I install one myself?
Many are designed for it. The two things that catch people out are drilling the worktop, which is unforgiving on stone, and the drain connection on RO systems, which has code requirements around air gaps.
How do I know the filter is still working?
You largely cannot tell by taste, so go by the rated capacity. If you want certainty, a test of the filtered water confirms it — which is worth doing where the filter is there for a health reason rather than taste.
Is this cheaper than bottled water?
Per gallon, dramatically so in most cases. Do the arithmetic with your own consumption and include the annual cartridge cost, and it is usually not a close comparison.
