Water Testing in Northwest Arkansas

Everything else on this website depends on this page. A water test replaces opinion with numbers — and the numbers are what decide whether you need a large system, a small one, or nothing at all.

What this service is

Water testing measures the specific substances in your water and reports them as numbers you can act on: hardness in grains per gallon, iron and manganese in milligrams per litre, pH, total dissolved solids, and where warranted, laboratory analysis for bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS.

There are two distinct kinds of test and they answer different questions. An in-home test measures the things that can be measured accurately on site: hardness, iron, pH, chlorine, TDS. It is fast, it is done in front of you, and it is enough to specify a softener or a carbon system. A certified laboratory test is required for anything microbiological and for most health-based contaminants, because those cannot be measured reliably with a field kit no matter what anyone tells you.

Anyone who claims to detect bacteria, lead or PFAS in your kitchen with a handheld device is not being straight with you.

How the technology works

An in-home test uses reagent chemistry and calibrated meters. Hardness is measured by titration — adding a reagent drop by drop until the water changes colour, with the drop count converting directly to grains per gallon. Iron, manganese and chlorine use colourimetric reagents compared against a reference. pH and TDS use electronic meters that need regular calibration to mean anything.

Laboratory testing is a different process entirely. Samples are collected in containers supplied by the laboratory, some containing preservative, following a documented procedure — which tap, whether it is flushed first, how the bottle is filled, and how quickly it reaches the lab. Collection method matters as much as the analysis. A bacteria sample taken carelessly produces a false positive; a lead sample taken after flushing produces a falsely reassuring result.

For lead and copper specifically, the useful approach is paired sampling: a first-draw sample after water has sat in the plumbing at least six hours, and a flushed sample afterwards. If first-draw is much higher, the metal is coming from your plumbing rather than your supply, which points at a completely different solution.

  • Proving water is 'pure', which is not a meaningful concept
  • Justifying a system that the numbers do not support

Why the right system depends on your actual water

A test is the only thing that tells you which of the twenty problems on this site you actually have, and how severe it is.

This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

How we evaluate whether this is right for you

No system on this website is appropriate for every property, and this one is no exception. The evaluation is the same short sequence every time.

  1. Understand the symptom

    What you are noticing, where, since when, and whether it affects one fixture or the whole building. This alone rules a great deal in or out.

  2. Test the water

    Measurements taken at your property. Where the question involves bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, that means certified laboratory analysis rather than a field kit, because those cannot be measured reliably in a kitchen.

  3. Check the practical constraints

    Available space, incoming pipe size, water pressure, a drain for backwash or reject water where the technology needs one, power, and how many fixtures might run at once. These decide what will physically work.

  4. Recommend against the numbers

    The specification follows from your results. If the results do not support this system, we will say so.

What a good test visit looks like

You should watch it happen, see the numbers written down, and leave with a copy. You should be told which results are normal for this area and which are not. You should not be shown an electrolysis device that turns water brown, or a TDS meter used as a proxy for safety — both are sales theatre rather than measurement. And you should not be asked to sign anything on the day.

Installation

NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.

We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.

Nothing is installed for a water test. If the results support equipment, that is a separate conversation on a separate day.

Permits and code

Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.

Testing is not a one-off for a private well. Conditions change with rainfall, seasons, land use nearby, and the condition of the well itself.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.

Certifications and performance claims

Testing is a service rather than a product, so the relevant credentials are about the laboratory and the sampler rather than NSF/ANSI product listings. What matters is that the laboratory is certified for drinking-water analysis and that samples are collected following its documented procedure.

The Arkansas Department of Health and your county extension office can point you to certified laboratories, and you are entitled to use one directly without going through any water-treatment company at all. We think that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

How we handle contaminant-reduction claims

We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.

Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.

What affects the cost

We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

  • Whether an in-home screen is sufficient or laboratory analysis is needed
  • How many laboratory parameters are requested — bacteria, nitrate, metals panel, PFAS
  • PFAS analysis in particular is considerably more expensive than a standard panel
  • Number of sample points, for a larger property or a commercial site
  • Whether arsenic speciation is required, which is an additional step
  • Travel, for properties well outside the core service area

Frequently asked questions

Is the water test free?

The in-home water test is free. Where your situation calls for certified laboratory analysis — bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, none of which can be measured reliably in a kitchen — we will explain what that involves and what it costs before anything is sent to a lab. Nothing gets charged without you agreeing to it first.

How long does an in-home test take?

The measurement itself is quick. The useful part is the conversation afterwards about what the numbers mean, which is worth allowing time for. Laboratory results come back on the laboratory's schedule, typically days rather than hours, and longer for specialised analysis like PFAS.

Can I just buy a test kit online?

Yes, and for hardness that is a perfectly sensible thing to do. Home kits for hardness, chlorine and pH are inexpensive and adequate. Where home kits fall down is bacteria, lead, arsenic, nitrate and PFAS — the ones that actually matter for health. Those need a certified laboratory.

Do you test water you did not install equipment for?

Yes. Testing an existing system, including one installed by someone else, is a normal request and we are glad to do it.

Will you try to sell me a system afterwards?

We will tell you what the results support. Sometimes that is a whole-house system, sometimes a single under-sink filter, and sometimes nothing at all. We will not ask you to decide during the visit and we do not use same-day-only pricing.

What if my results show something serious?

We will tell you plainly, explain what the number means against the relevant standard, and point you at the public health resources rather than only at our own services. For anything involving health, your physician and the Arkansas Department of Health are better authorities than a water company.
