Salt-free conditioning is a genuinely useful technology that is frequently sold dishonestly. It does something real. It does not do what a softener does, and any company telling you otherwise is misleading you.
What this service is
A salt-free conditioner does not remove hardness minerals. It changes their physical form so they are less inclined to stick to surfaces.
The most common approach is template assisted crystallisation, usually called TAC. Water passes over a medium whose surface encourages dissolved calcium and magnesium to form microscopic stable crystals. Because the minerals are now bound up in suspended crystals rather than dissolved and ready to precipitate on the first hot surface they meet, they pass through the plumbing without adhering.
So the minerals are still in your water. Your hardness test will read exactly the same after a conditioner as before it. That is not a fault — it is how the technology works — but it has consequences that customers deserve to hear before buying.

How the technology works
TAC media presents a surface with sites that act as templates. Dissolved calcium and magnesium ions gather at these sites and form seed crystals, which then break away into the flow as microscopic particles. Once the mineral is locked into a stable crystal it is far less available to deposit as scale on a heat exchanger or a fixture.

Being straight about the evidence
TAC has been studied and there is legitimate evidence for scale reduction under defined conditions. Results vary with water chemistry, temperature and flow, and the technology is more sensitive to those conditions than ion exchange is. Performance also depends on adequate contact time, so undersizing hurts more here than it does with a softener.
We are not going to quote you a percentage scale reduction, because the figures that circulate in marketing come from specific test conditions that may not resemble your house.

Why the right system depends on your actual water
TAC performance is more sensitive to water chemistry than ion exchange, so the decision between conditioning and softening should follow a test rather than a preference formed from advertising.
This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

Two questions to ask before buying any salt-free system
1. Will my hardness test change? The honest answer is no. If a salesperson says yes, or dodges it, end the conversation.
2. Will soap lather better? The honest answer is no. Hardness minerals are still present and still react with soap.
Salt-free conditioning is sold under a lot of names — salt-free softener, water conditioner, descaler, catalytic system. The term 'salt-free softener' is the one to be wary of, because it is not softening by any technical definition.
Installation
NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.
We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.
Installation is simpler than a softener: an in-line unit on the main, with no drain, no power and no brine tank. Pre-filtration for sediment is normally required, and the media is sensitive to iron and chlorine, which may mean additional stages ahead of it.

Permits and code

Certifications and performance claims
This is an area where certification is genuinely thinner than for softeners, and that is worth knowing. There is no NSF/ANSI hardness-reduction standard that a salt-free conditioner can meet, because it does not reduce hardness.
Some products carry certification for scale reduction performance under specific test protocols, and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 apply to material safety and lead content. Ask precisely what a product is certified for and under which protocol — the answer is often less than the marketing implies.
How we handle contaminant-reduction claims
We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.
Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. Frequently asked questions
Is a salt-free system really a water softener?
No, and this matters. Softening has a technical definition: reducing hardness minerals. Salt-free conditioning leaves them in the water and changes their form. It is a legitimate scale-control technology sold under a misleading name.
Will my water feel different?
No. The slippery feel of softened water comes from soap rinsing cleanly without hardness minerals to react with. Conditioning leaves the minerals in place, so soap behaves as it did before.
Will it get rid of existing scale?
Some manufacturers claim gradual reduction of existing deposits over months. That is plausible but we will not promise it. The reliable claim is reduced formation of new scale.
Does it work as well as a softener for protecting a water heater?
For scale protection specifically, a well-sized conditioner in suitable water performs respectably. A softener is more thorough and less sensitive to conditions. If a tankless manufacturer specifies a maximum hardness for warranty purposes, check whether they accept conditioning — many require actual hardness reduction.
Why would I choose this over a softener?
