Well-Water Filtration in Northwest Arkansas

A private well is unregulated and unmonitored. Nobody tests it for you, nobody sends you an annual report, and nobody is responsible for what comes out of it except you. That is the whole case for testing before treating.

What this service is

Well water filtration is not one product. It is a treatment train — a sequence of stages assembled specifically for what your well contains, in an order that lets each stage protect the ones behind it.

Northwest Arkansas wells draw from Ozark limestone, and that geology produces a fairly predictable menu of possibilities: hardness, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, sediment, sometimes low pH, and — because karst terrain lets surface water move quickly — a real possibility of bacterial contamination.

Which of those you actually have is not predictable at all. Two wells a mile apart in Madison County can test nothing alike, because in fractured rock they may be drawing from entirely different water.

These are the complaints that lead people to ask about this. Recognising yourself here is a starting point, not a diagnosis.

How the technology works

The design principle is sequence. Each stage handles what it is good at and protects what follows.

A typical Ozark well treatment train

  1. Sediment removal — a spin-down separator or backwashing filter for sand and grit, protecting everything downstream.
  2. pH correction if the water is acidic, because several downstream media only work within a pH range, and because acidic water attacks your plumbing.
  3. Oxidation and iron/manganese/sulfide removal — aeration or an oxidising filter, before anything that iron would foul.
  4. Softening for hardness, after iron has been dealt with, because iron destroys softener resin.
  5. Carbon for taste and odour polishing.
  6. UV disinfection last, where testing warrants it, because UV needs the clearest possible water to be effective.
  7. Point-of-use RO at the kitchen tap where nitrate, arsenic or other dissolved contaminants are confirmed.

Very few wells need all of that. Many need two or three stages. Some need nothing but a sediment filter, and we will tell you when that is the case.

The mistakes we most often find

A softener installed ahead of an iron filter, ruined within two years. A UV lamp with no sediment pre-filter, disinfecting nothing. An oxidising medium installed outside its working pH range. A system sized for average flow that collapses when the shower and the washing machine coincide. Every one of these comes from selling a package rather than reading a test.

Where it fits, and where it does not

Appropriate for

Not the right tool for

  • Fixing a well construction problem — a damaged casing or a poor surface seal needs a well contractor, not a filter
  • Replacing annual testing, which continues regardless of treatment
  • Situations where the pump or pressure system is the actual fault
  • Guessing. A treatment train designed without a laboratory panel is a guess with a price tag

Why the right system depends on your actual water

Ozark wells vary more than almost any other water source in the country, because fractured karst geology means neighbouring wells can draw from different water entirely.

This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

How we evaluate whether this is right for you

No system on this website is appropriate for every property, and this one is no exception. The evaluation is the same short sequence every time.

  1. Understand the symptom

    What you are noticing, where, since when, and whether it affects one fixture or the whole building. This alone rules a great deal in or out.

  2. Test the water

    Measurements taken at your property. Where the question involves bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, that means certified laboratory analysis rather than a field kit, because those cannot be measured reliably in a kitchen.

  3. Check the practical constraints

    Available space, incoming pipe size, water pressure, a drain for backwash or reject water where the technology needs one, power, and how many fixtures might run at once. These decide what will physically work.

  4. Recommend against the numbers

    The specification follows from your results. If the results do not support this system, we will say so.

The well panel we start from

Total coliform bacteria and E. coli; nitrate; hardness; iron; manganese; pH; total dissolved solids; hydrogen sulfide where an odour is reported; and arsenic as a baseline. Additional parameters where the property history or nearby land use suggests them.

Bacteria, nitrate and arsenic require certified laboratory analysis. Anyone offering to measure those at your kitchen table is not measuring them.

Installation

NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.

We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.

Well systems are usually installed in a well house, garage or utility room. Freeze protection is a serious consideration in an unheated well house — a frozen media tank is normally a replacement.

Sample ports between stages are inexpensive at installation and invaluable afterwards, because they let anyone diagnose which stage has stopped working without dismantling the system.

  1. Test comprehensively

    A laboratory panel, not a field screen, because the design depends on numbers a field kit cannot produce.

  2. Check the well itself

    Cap, casing, seal and the grade around the wellhead. Sometimes the right answer is a well repair rather than a filtration system.

  3. Design the train in the right order

    Written down, with each stage sized for peak flow rather than average use.

  4. Install with bypasses and sample ports

    So the house keeps running during service and so faults can be isolated later.

  5. Commission and verify

    Flush media, program valves, and test the treated water at each stage to confirm the design works.

Permits and code

Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.

Maintenance and replacement schedule

Well systems need more attention than city-water systems because the load is heavier and more variable. Annual testing continues after treatment — it is how you find out that a stage has stopped performing.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.

Certifications and performance claims

A well system is an assembly, so certification applies stage by stage: NSF/ANSI 44 for softeners, NSF/ANSI 55 for ultraviolet systems, NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 for filtration, NSF/ANSI 58 for any point-of-use RO, and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 for materials.

For UV specifically, the distinction between Class A and Class B under NSF/ANSI 55 matters a great deal, and is explained on the UV page.

How we handle contaminant-reduction claims

We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.

Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.

What affects the cost

We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

  • How many treatment stages the laboratory panel actually calls for
  • Tank sizing, driven by peak flow rather than average use
  • Which oxidising media the water chemistry requires
  • Whether pH correction is needed ahead of everything else
  • Whether UV is warranted, and at what flow rate
  • Drain availability at the equipment location
  • Freeze protection for a well house
  • Any well repair work identified during the inspection
  • Ongoing media, salt, lamp and cartridge costs

Frequently asked questions

How often should I test my well?

Annually for total coliform bacteria and nitrate as a baseline, plus whenever the water changes, after flooding, and after any work on the well. Arsenic and metals need testing less often since geology changes slowly.

My well water looks and tastes fine. Do I still need to test?

Yes. Bacteria, nitrate and arsenic are invisible, tasteless and odourless at levels that matter. Water that looks perfect tells you nothing about any of them.

Can one system handle everything?

One integrated system, yes — but it will contain several stages, because no single medium handles sediment, iron, hardness, odour and bacteria. Any product marketed as a single solution for all well problems is overselling.

What if the problem is the well itself?

Then we say so. A damaged cap, a cracked casing, a poor surface seal or a failing screen is a job for a well contractor, and treating the symptom with filtration while the pathway stays open is the wrong order of operations.

Does treatment mean I can stop testing?

No. Testing after treatment is how you discover that a lamp has aged, a medium is exhausted, or the raw water has changed. It becomes more important once you are relying on equipment, not less.
