What this service is
Whole-house filtration, also called point-of-entry treatment, sits on the main line where water enters your home. Everything downstream receives treated water: kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, water heater, ice maker, outdoor taps.
The phrase describes a location, not a technology. A whole-house system is assembled from stages chosen for what your water actually contains — sediment filtration, carbon, an iron filter, a softener, a neutralizer, UV. A house with a chlorine taste complaint on city water and a house with iron and sulfur on a well both get a ‘whole-house system’, and they have almost nothing in common inside the cabinet.
That is why a quoted price for a whole-house system, given before anyone has tested your water, is not really a price for anything.

How the technology works
Water enters the house, passes through the treatment stages in sequence, and continues to the rest of the plumbing. Sequence matters as much as selection, because each stage protects the ones behind it.
A typical order runs: sediment filtration first, catching particles that would foul everything downstream; then any oxidation or iron removal; then a softener if hardness warrants one; then carbon for taste, odour and chlorine; then UV last if disinfection is needed, because UV requires the clearest possible water to work.
Getting the order wrong is one of the most common faults we find in existing installations. A carbon tank ahead of an iron filter blinds off with oxidised iron. A UV lamp ahead of a sediment filter is shielded from the organisms it is supposed to be treating. A softener fed with untreated high-iron water fouls its resin and loses capacity within a couple of years.
Sizing is the other half. Every stage has a service flow rate, and if the system is undersized for the number of fixtures that might run at once, you get a pressure drop when the shower and the dishwasher coincide — and, more seriously, reduced contact time, which means the media does not do its job.

Why the right system depends on your actual water
A whole-house system is a set of stages chosen from your test results, not a product with a fixed specification.
This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

Installation

We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.
Whole-house equipment needs a suitable location: enough space, a drain for any stage that backwashes, power where required, and access for servicing. Most Northwest Arkansas homes use a garage, utility room or basement.
Freeze protection matters here. Equipment in an unheated garage or an outbuilding needs consideration, and a well house needs it seriously — a media tank that freezes is usually a replacement rather than a repair.

Permits and code
Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.
Maintenance and replacement schedule
Whole-house systems are not fit-and-forget. Each stage has its own requirement, and a system left unserviced can end up worse than no system at all — a saturated carbon bed, for instance, stops adsorbing and can become a place for bacteria to grow.

Certifications and performance claims
Relevant standards for whole-house components include NSF/ANSI 42 for aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste, odour and particulate reduction; NSF/ANSI 44 for cation exchange softeners; NSF/ANSI 53 for health-related reduction claims; NSF/ANSI 55 for ultraviolet systems; and NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 covering the safety and lead content of materials in contact with drinking water.
A whole-house system is an assembly, so certification applies to individual components rather than to the installation as a whole. Ask which components carry which listings.
How we handle contaminant-reduction claims
We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.
Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:
- How many treatment stages your results actually require
- Tank and media sizing, driven by household size and peak flow rate
- The media types specified — some are considerably more expensive than others
- Whether a drain is already available at the location, or has to be run
- Incoming pipe size and material, and the plumbing work to tie in
- Whether a bypass and pressure gauges are included, which they should be
- Electrical work where a stage needs power
- Freeze protection for an unheated space
- Ongoing media and cartridge replacement cost, which is the number most quotes leave out
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a whole-house system or just a drinking-water filter?
It depends on where the problem shows up. If it bothers you only at the kitchen tap, a point-of-use filter is far cheaper and entirely adequate. If you notice it in the shower, in the laundry, on fixtures throughout the house, or you are protecting appliances, point-of-entry is the right place. Many households end up with both: whole-house for the bulk problem and a small system at the kitchen tap for drinking water.
Will a whole-house filter remove lead?
Usually not usefully, and this is a point worth understanding. Lead typically enters from solder, brass fittings and service lines — which are downstream of where a whole-house system sits. Filtering at the point of entry does not help with lead added afterwards. Certified point-of-use treatment at the tap you drink from is the standard approach.
How much space do I need?
It depends entirely on the stages. A single carbon tank needs modest space; a well system with sediment, iron filtration, softening and UV needs considerably more, plus service clearance. We will measure rather than guess.
Will it reduce my water pressure?
A correctly sized system produces a small pressure drop that most households never notice. An undersized one produces a drop you notice every time two fixtures run at once. This is the most common consequence of buying on price alone.
Can I install one myself?
Connecting equipment to a potable supply involves code requirements including backflow protection and correct drain air gaps. Whether we can install it for you is covered in the disclosure above.
What happens if the system needs service?
This is what the bypass valve is for. It isolates the equipment and restores untreated water to the house so you are never without water while waiting for a part.
