Bacteria in Well Water in Northwest Arkansas
This is the water problem you cannot detect. Bacteria have no taste, no smell and no colour at the levels that matter. A well can look, smell and taste perfect and still test positive.
Northwest Arkansas has a specific reason to take this seriously. Much of the region sits on karst — fractured, cavernous limestone. Water can move through karst quickly, through open fractures and conduits, without the slow filtration that a sand or gravel aquifer provides. Surface contamination can reach groundwater faster here than in many other places.
Common symptoms
People describe this problem to us in these ways. You may recognise several, or only one.
- Nothing at all — this is the point
- Occasionally, unexplained gastrointestinal illness in the household
- Sometimes a musty or earthy taste, though its absence proves nothing
- Cloudiness or a change in water after heavy rain
- A well that has flooded, been worked on, or has a damaged cap
Potential causes
Surface water reaching the well
Through a damaged or missing well cap, a cracked casing, an inadequate grout seal, or a well finished below grade where water can pool.
Karst conduits
Fractured limestone can carry surface water rapidly and with little natural filtration. A well in karst terrain is more exposed to what happens at the surface some distance away.
Septic systems
A failing or too-close septic system is a classic source. Setback distances exist for exactly this reason.
Livestock and land application
Animal waste on the land surface is a recognised source of coliform bacteria in shallow groundwater.
Flooding
Any well that has been submerged should be considered contaminated until tested clear.
Bacteria growing in the plumbing itself
Biofilm in the pressure tank or distribution lines, sometimes the actual source even when the well tests clean.
This one requires testing to confirm
Laboratory testing is the only way. There is no home method, no visual cue and no reliable taste indicator, and any filter salesperson who claims to detect bacteria in your kitchen is not telling the truth.
Standard practice is to test for total coliform — an indicator group signalling that a pathway for contamination exists — and, if that is positive, for E. coli, which indicates faecal contamination specifically and is the more serious finding.
Private wells should be tested at least annually, plus after any flooding, any work on the well, and any change in taste, smell or appearance. The Arkansas Department of Health and your county extension office can advise on certified laboratories.
Treatment technologies commonly used
Which of these is right depends on what your water actually measures. These are the technologies genuinely used for this problem, not a list of everything we sell.
UV Water Purification
Ultraviolet disinfection is a common approach for continuous microbiological protection. It requires clear water to work — UV light cannot pass through turbidity, iron or tannins — so pre-filtration is normally part of the design.
Well-Water Filtration
Bacteria are rarely the only finding, and the treatment train has to handle everything the test found.
Sediment Filtration
Essential ahead of UV, because particles shield organisms from the light.
Water Testing
The starting point and, afterwards, the confirmation that treatment is working.
If your test comes back positive
A positive result is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to act methodically rather than immediately buying equipment.
- Use an alternative supply for drinking and cooking, or boil water at a rolling boil for one minute, until you have a clear result.
- Find the pathway. Inspect the well cap, casing and the grade around the wellhead. Water should drain away from the casing, not pool against it. Check the distance to any septic system.
- Shock chlorinate the well and plumbing, following established procedure.
- Retest after the chlorine has cleared. This step is frequently skipped and it is the one that tells you whether the problem is actually solved.
- If it returns, treat continuously. Recurrence means the pathway is still open. That is the point at which permanent disinfection equipment makes sense — not before.
We would rather you spent money on a well repair that fixes the cause than on equipment that manages a symptom forever.
Questions we are asked about this
Can I tell if my well has bacteria without testing?
No. Bacteria at levels that matter are invisible, tasteless and odourless. This is precisely why annual testing is recommended for private wells.
What does a positive total coliform result mean?
Total coliform bacteria are common in soil and vegetation and are not usually harmful themselves. A positive result means a pathway exists by which surface material is reaching your water — and if that pathway is open, something more harmful could use it. A positive E. coli result is more serious and indicates faecal contamination.
Does boiling water kill bacteria?
Yes. A rolling boil for one minute is the standard recommendation for microbiological contamination. Note that boiling does the opposite for nitrate, lead and arsenic: it concentrates them as water evaporates.
Will a carbon filter remove bacteria?
No. Standard carbon filtration is not a disinfection technology and is not certified as one. Some carbon blocks carry a certification for cyst reduction, which is a specific and limited claim about organisms like Cryptosporidium — it is not general protection against bacteria.
Is UV enough on its own?
Only where the water is clear enough for the light to reach every organism. Turbidity, iron and tannins shade organisms from UV, so pre-filtration is normally required. UV also treats water only as it passes the lamp; it leaves no residual protecting the plumbing downstream.
