White Scale on Fixtures in Northwest Arkansas Homes
That chalky white crust on your shower head and around the base of your taps is calcium carbonate — limescale. It is the visible, above-ground evidence of what your water is also doing inside places you cannot see: your water heater, your dishwasher, your coffee maker and your plumbing.
Common symptoms
People describe this problem to us in these ways. You may recognise several, or only one.

Potential causes

Where water evaporates or is heated, the dissolved minerals it carried are left behind as solid scale.
Heat
Scaling accelerates sharply with temperature, which is why the water heater and the kettle scale before the cold line does.
Evaporation at fixtures
A droplet left on chrome evaporates and leaves its mineral content behind. Repeat a thousand times and you have crust.
Aerators and small orifices
Restrictions create turbulence and concentrate deposits, which is why aerators and shower heads clog first.
You can often confirm this one yourself
You can confirm this one yourself. Scale dissolves in acid: white vinegar on a cloth wrapped around a tap for an hour will soften and remove it. If the deposit dissolves in vinegar, it is limescale and you have hardness.
What the visual check does not give you is the number. Sizing a softener requires measured hardness in grains per gallon, along with household size and peak flow. Seeing scale tells you there is hardness; a test tells you how much, and whether iron is present alongside it.

Questions we are asked about this
Will treating my water remove scale that is already there?
Not immediately, and be sceptical of anyone promising it will. Preventing new scale is what treatment does. Existing deposits on fixtures need cleaning off; existing scale inside a water heater generally needs flushing. Some users of conditioning systems report gradual reduction of existing scale over months, which is plausible but not something we will promise you.
How do I remove scale from a shower head?
Unscrew it and soak it in white vinegar for a few hours, then clear the jets with a soft brush. If you cannot remove it, tie a bag of vinegar around it. Avoid abrasives on finished surfaces.
Is scale damaging my plumbing?
Scale accumulation reduces the efficiency of water heaters and can shorten the life of appliances that heat water. In household copper and PEX supply lines, complete blockage is uncommon; the practical cost falls on water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and ice makers.
My neighbour has no scale and I do. How?
If you are on different sources — one on a well and one on city water — that alone explains it. It is the most common reason two houses on the same road have entirely different water.
