Reverse Osmosis Systems in Northwest Arkansas

Reverse osmosis is the most capable household drinking-water technology in common use. It is also the one with the most trade-offs worth understanding before you commit: wastewater, storage, pressure, and remineralisation.

What this service is

A reverse osmosis system forces water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane with pores small enough to reject most dissolved substances. Water molecules pass; the great majority of dissolved salts, metals and many other contaminants do not, and are flushed to drain.

RO is normally installed at the point of use, under a kitchen sink, feeding a dedicated tap and often an ice maker. Whole-house RO exists but is expensive, wasteful and rarely warranted in a residential setting.

How the technology works

Osmosis is water moving naturally across a membrane from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated one. Reverse osmosis applies pressure to drive water the other way — from concentrated to dilute — leaving dissolved substances behind.

A residential RO system is a sequence of stages:

  1. Sediment pre-filter, protecting everything downstream.
  2. Carbon pre-filter, critical because chlorine destroys common membrane materials. Skip or neglect this and the membrane fails quickly.
  3. The RO membrane itself, where the work happens.
  4. Storage tank, because RO produces water slowly — the tank accumulates it so you get a normal flow at the tap.
  5. Carbon post-filter, polishing taste on the way out of the tank.
  6. Optional remineralisation stage, adding calcium and magnesium back for taste and to raise pH.

The wastewater question

RO produces a reject stream that carries the rejected contaminants to drain. The ratio varies by system design, pressure and water temperature, and newer designs are considerably more efficient than older ones. Ask for the actual ratio of the model being quoted rather than accepting a general claim — and be aware that low incoming pressure makes any system less efficient.

What RO water is like

Very low in dissolved minerals, which most people find clean-tasting and some find flat. It is slightly acidic as a result, which is why remineralisation stages exist. It makes noticeably better ice and coffee.

Where it fits, and where it does not

  • Hardness throughout the house — RO at the kitchen tap does nothing for your water heater
  • Bacteria as a primary barrier, unless the system is specifically designed and certified for it
  • Situations with very low water pressure, without a booster pump
  • Households unwilling to maintain filters on schedule
  • Sediment or iron-heavy water without proper pre-treatment

Why the right system depends on your actual water

Which membrane and which certified claims you need depends entirely on what your test found, and an RO bought for a contaminant you do not have is money spent for nothing.

This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

How we evaluate whether this is right for you

No system on this website is appropriate for every property, and this one is no exception. The evaluation is the same short sequence every time.

  1. Understand the symptom

    What you are noticing, where, since when, and whether it affects one fixture or the whole building. This alone rules a great deal in or out.

  2. Test the water

    Measurements taken at your property. Where the question involves bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, that means certified laboratory analysis rather than a field kit, because those cannot be measured reliably in a kitchen.

  3. Check the practical constraints

    Available space, incoming pipe size, water pressure, a drain for backwash or reject water where the technology needs one, power, and how many fixtures might run at once. These decide what will physically work.

  4. Recommend against the numbers

    The specification follows from your results. If the results do not support this system, we will say so.

Before specifying RO we check incoming pressure, because RO performance and efficiency both depend on it, and low pressure is a common cause of disappointing output. We also check chlorine, since the carbon pre-filter has to protect the membrane, and hardness, since scaling shortens membrane life.

Installation

NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.

We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.

An under-sink RO needs cabinet space for the unit and the storage tank, a drain connection with a proper air gap, and a hole in the worktop or sink for the dedicated faucet. Feeding an ice maker is usually possible and is one of the most appreciated additions.

    Which certified reduction claims you actually need.

  2. Check pressure and space

    Incoming pressure, cabinet room for the tank, and drain access.

  3. Fit the faucet and tie in

    Including the drain saddle with an air gap, and an ice maker line if wanted.

  4. Flush and commission

    New membranes and carbon need flushing before use; the first tank is discarded.

  5. Test the product water

    Confirming the system performs as specified, rather than assuming.

Permits and code

Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.

Maintenance and replacement schedule

RO systems are the most maintenance-dependent equipment in a typical home, and the pre-filters are not optional — the carbon pre-filter is what keeps chlorine away from the membrane. Neglect it and you replace a membrane instead of a cartridge.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.

Certifications and performance claims

NSF/ANSI 58 is the standard for reverse osmosis systems. It covers TDS reduction and material safety, and individual models may carry additional certified claims for lead, arsenic (pentavalent), nitrate, fluoride, cysts, PFOA and PFOS, and other contaminants.

The critical point: those additional claims are optional and model-specific. An RO system certified under NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction has not demonstrated arsenic or PFAS performance unless the listing names them. Ask for the performance data sheet for the exact model.

NSF/ANSI 53 may apply to the carbon stages, and 61 and 372 to materials and lead content.

How we handle contaminant-reduction claims

We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.

Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.

What affects the cost

We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

  • Number of stages and whether remineralisation is included
  • Which certified reduction claims the model carries
  • Membrane capacity in gallons per day
  • Whether a permeate pump or booster pump is needed for low pressure
  • Tank size and whether it fits the cabinet
  • Whether an ice maker line is run
  • Faucet style and worktop drilling
  • Annual filter replacement cost, which is the number to compare between systems

Frequently asked questions

Does reverse osmosis waste a lot of water?

RO sends a reject stream to drain, and the ratio varies considerably between designs. Modern systems are meaningfully more efficient than older ones. Ask for the specific ratio of the model quoted, and bear in mind that low incoming pressure makes any system worse.

Does RO remove healthy minerals?

Yes, along with everything else — that is how it works. Whether that matters is debated; most dietary mineral intake comes from food rather than water. If you prefer mineral content, a remineralisation stage adds calcium and magnesium back and improves taste for many people.

Is RO water acidic?

Slightly, because removing dissolved minerals removes buffering capacity. A remineralisation stage raises it. This is not a health concern for most people — many common beverages are far more acidic.

Why is my RO faucet flow so slow?

Most commonly a storage tank that has lost its air pre-charge, which is checkable and adjustable. Other causes are clogged pre-filters, a failing membrane, or low incoming pressure.

Do I need whole-house RO?

Almost certainly not. Whole-house RO is expensive, wasteful and needs substantial pre-treatment. In residential settings the sensible arrangement is whole-house treatment for the bulk problem and point-of-use RO for drinking water.

Will RO remove bacteria?

An RO membrane physically excludes organisms by size, but an RO system is not a disinfection barrier unless specifically designed and certified as one. If your water has a confirmed microbiological problem, that needs addressing directly — usually with UV.
