How the technology works
Check these first, at no cost
- Is the bypass valve open? If it was closed for a repair or a plumbing job and never reopened, the softener has been sitting idle. This is more common than you would think.
- Is there a salt bridge? Push a broom handle down through the salt. If you break through a hard crust with a void underneath, that is your fault: the tank looked full but no brine was being made.
- Has the clock reset? After a power cut, many valves lose the time and regenerate at the wrong hour, or not at all.
- Is the drain line kinked or blocked?
- Is the brine line connected and the tank float free?
The common genuine faults
Blocked injector. The venturi injector that draws brine is a small orifice and blocks with sediment or salt residue. The softener runs a full cycle and draws no brine. Cleaning it is straightforward.
Failed control valve components. Pistons, seals and spacers wear. Symptoms include continuous drain flow, failure to advance through cycles, or water bypassing the resin internally.
Fouled or exhausted resin. Iron is the usual culprit, coating the beads and destroying capacity. Chlorine degrades resin over years. Resin that is genuinely exhausted needs replacing, and if iron caused it, the iron needs addressing too or the new resin follows the old.
Broken distributor tube or screen. Produces resin beads in the household water, which is unmistakable once you see it.
Programming that never suited the house. A valve on factory defaults, or set to a hardness figure nobody measured.
Repair or replace
Control valve parts, injectors and seals are usually worth repairing. Resin replacement in an older unit is where the calculation gets closer, and if the unit was wrongly sized for your water in the first place, repairing it buys you a working version of the wrong equipment.

Why the right system depends on your actual water
Whether a repair is worthwhile depends on the age of the unit and on whether it was correctly specified for your water in the first place.
This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

Diagnosis starts with a hardness test on the treated water, which immediately confirms whether the softener is doing anything at all, then works through the brine system, the injector, the valve cycle and the programming.
Installation
NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.
We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.
Repairs are carried out on site where parts allow. Where a repair is not economic we will say so plainly rather than doing the work and leaving you to discover it.
Permits and code
Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.
Certifications and performance claims
Repairs restore existing equipment, so certification applies to the original unit and to any replacement components fitted. Where resin is replaced in a softener certified under NSF/ANSI 44, the replacement resin should be appropriate to maintain that specification.
How we handle contaminant-reduction claims
We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.
Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.
What affects the cost
We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

Frequently asked questions
My salt tank is full but my water is hard again. What is wrong?
Almost certainly a salt bridge — a crust across the tank with a void underneath, so no brine is being made. Push a broom handle through it. If that does not fix it, the injector is the next suspect.
My softener is running water to drain constantly.
Usually a control valve fault: a stuck piston or worn seals holding the valve in a drain position. Close the bypass to stop the water loss and get it looked at.
I am finding small beads in my taps.
That is softener resin, and it means the distributor tube or its screen has broken. The beads will keep coming and can clog aerators and appliance valves, so it is worth addressing.
Is it worth repairing an old softener?
It depends on age, parts availability and whether it was correctly sized for your water. Repairing a unit that was always wrong for the property buys you a working version of the wrong equipment, and we will tell you when that is the situation.
