Sediment and Cloudy Water in Northwest Arkansas Homes
Cloudy water has one of two explanations, and there is a five-second test that tells you which. Get that right and you have saved yourself both worry and money, because one of the two needs no treatment at all.
Common symptoms
People describe this problem to us in these ways. You may recognise several, or only one.
- Water that looks milky or white when first poured
- Visible grit or particles settling in the bottom of a glass
- Sand or fine sediment in aerators, shower heads and toilet tanks
- Cloudiness after the utility has worked on a main nearby
- Filters or appliance screens clogging quickly
- Water that runs briefly dirty then clears
Potential causes
Dissolved air
Extremely common and completely harmless. Pressure and temperature changes force air into solution; when the water reaches your glass at atmospheric pressure the air comes out as millions of tiny bubbles.
Fine sediment, silt or clay
Particles carried in the water itself. Common on private wells, especially after heavy rain in karst terrain where surface water can reach groundwater quickly, and after any disturbance to a distribution main.
Iron or manganese particles
Dissolved iron that has oxidised turns to visible orange particles; manganese turns black. These are a different problem from inert grit.
Disturbed deposits in your own pipes
Years of accumulated material in older galvanised plumbing can release when flow or pressure changes.
A failing well screen or a dropping water table
A well that has started producing sand is telling you something about the well itself, not just the water.
You can often confirm this one yourself
The glass test. Fill a clear glass, set it on the counter, and watch it for two minutes.
- If it clears from the bottom upward, it is air. Nothing is wrong and no equipment is needed.
- If it clears from the top downward and leaves anything in the bottom, that is sediment, and the particles can be measured and filtered.
If it is sediment, the useful follow-up questions are how large the particles are and whether they are inert grit or oxidised metals, because a filter that is too fine will clog constantly and one that is too coarse will pass everything through.

Sediment filtration is nearly always the first stage of a whole-house system, protecting everything downstream.
Iron & Manganese Filtration
If the particles are oxidised metals rather than grit, a plain sediment filter will blind off quickly and the metals need addressing directly.
Well-Water Filtration
For wells producing sand, the well itself may need attention alongside filtration.
Questions we are asked about this
My water is cloudy but clears on its own. Is that a problem?
If it clears from the bottom up within a couple of minutes it is dissolved air and there is nothing to fix. It is one of the few water complaints where the correct professional answer is to do nothing.
How small a particle should I filter?
It depends entirely on what is in your water and what you are protecting. Too fine and you will replace clogged cartridges constantly and lose pressure; too coarse and the sediment sails through. Measuring first is cheaper than guessing twice.
My water is cloudy after the city worked on the street. What should I do?
Run a cold tap at the lowest fixture in the house for several minutes to flush the line. If it persists beyond a day, or comes back repeatedly, contact your utility — recurring discoloured water after main work is something they want to know about.
Will a sediment filter improve taste?
Usually not on its own. Sediment filtration removes particles; taste and odour problems are generally dissolved substances, which need carbon or another technology. The two are often combined in one system.
