Water Heater Scale in Northwest Arkansas Homes
Your water heater is where hard water does its most expensive damage, and it does it invisibly. Every gallon heated leaves a little of its dissolved mineral content behind on the heating surface. Over years that becomes a layer of scale between the heat source and the water.
Scale is an insulator. The heater has to work longer to reach the same temperature, which costs energy, and the element or burner runs hotter than designed, which shortens its life.
Common symptoms
People describe this problem to us in these ways. You may recognise several, or only one.

Potential causes
Dissolved hardness minerals precipitating when heated
Solubility falls as temperature rises, so heating water forces minerals out of solution exactly where you least want them.
Higher thermostat settings
Hotter water scales faster. There is a real trade-off here with the temperature needed to inhibit bacterial growth in a tank.
Tankless heaters being especially sensitive
Narrow heat-exchanger passages and very high heat flux make tankless units considerably less tolerant of hardness than tank heaters. Most manufacturers specify a maximum hardness and require periodic descaling for the warranty to remain valid.
No routine flushing
A tank that has never been drained accumulates sediment and scale on the bottom, above the burner on a gas unit.
Partly visible, but testing gives the answer
Two indicators you can check without tools. First, listen: popping and rumbling during a heating cycle is the classic sound of water boiling underneath a scale layer on the tank bottom. Second, open the drain valve into a bucket and see what comes out.
To know whether it will keep happening, measure hardness. If you have a tankless unit, check the manufacturer's maximum hardness specification, because exceeding it is a common and expensive way to void a warranty without realising.

How often should I flush my water heater?
Manufacturers commonly recommend annually, and more often in hard water. Follow the manual for your specific unit, and if you are not comfortable doing it, a plumber can. On a tankless unit, descaling on the manufacturer's schedule is usually a warranty condition rather than a suggestion.
Will softening extend my water heater's life?
Reducing scale reduces one significant cause of premature failure and efficiency loss. We are not going to attach a number of extra years to that, because it depends on your hardness, your usage and the unit itself. The mechanism is real and well understood; the specific outcome is not something we can promise.
My tankless heater keeps throwing an error. Is it the water?
Scale in the heat exchanger is a common cause of flow and temperature faults on tankless units. Check the manufacturer's hardness limit against a measurement of your actual water, and check when it was last descaled.
Does scale in the heater affect my drinking water?
Not directly, and in any case you should not be drinking hot tap water. Hot water sits in contact with tank and plumbing surfaces for long periods, which is why the standard advice is to use cold water for drinking and cooking and for making up infant formula.
