Iron and Manganese Filtration in Northwest Arkansas

Iron filtration is where water treatment stops being generic. The right medium depends on your pH, your iron concentration, whether manganese is present, and which chemical form the iron is in.

What this service is

Iron and manganese are dissolved out of rock by groundwater, and Ozark limestone supplies plenty of both. Iron stains orange; manganese stains black or dark brown. They frequently occur together and are commonly treated by the same equipment, but the conditions each requires are different.

Treatment works by oxidation followed by filtration: convert the dissolved metal into a solid particle, then filter the particle out. Everything else is detail about how the oxidation happens.

How the technology works

The three forms, and why they matter

Ferrous (clear-water) iron is dissolved and invisible. Water looks clean and turns orange in the glass over minutes. It must be oxidised before it can be filtered.

Ferric (red-water) iron is already oxidised into particles. It can be filtered mechanically without an oxidation step.

Iron bacteria produce a reddish slime that fouls media and clogs equipment. Filtration alone does not resolve it; the well and plumbing usually need disinfecting first.

Oxidising filter media

Several media catalyse oxidation and then trap the resulting particles, backwashing periodically to flush them to drain. They differ in the conditions they require:

  • pH range — the most common reason an iron filter disappoints. Several media need a pH above a specific threshold to work, and manganese generally requires a higher pH than iron. Water below the range needs pH correction first.
  • Dissolved oxygen — some media need it, which is why air injection is often paired with them.
  • Regeneration — some media are self-regenerating on backwash; others need periodic chemical regeneration.
  • Contact time — undersizing reduces removal directly.

Air injection

Drawing air into the water ahead of the filter provides oxygen for the reaction without chemicals. Widely used, low running cost, and effective within its limits. It also helps with hydrogen sulfide, which frequently accompanies iron in Ozark wells.

Chemical oxidation

Where iron is high, manganese is significant, or iron bacteria are present, injecting an oxidant ahead of the filter gives more decisive results, at the cost of more equipment and more maintenance.

  • Iron coming from your own corroding pipes rather than the well

Why the right system depends on your actual water

pH, iron concentration, manganese presence and the chemical form of the iron all change which medium is appropriate, and getting any one of them wrong produces a filter that does very little.

This is the reason we test first. Two properties a mile apart in Northwest Arkansas can need entirely different equipment — one on treated surface water from Beaver Lake, one on a private well drawing from fractured Ozark limestone. Even two wells on the same road can differ, because in karst geology they may be drawing from different water. A recommendation made without your numbers is a recommendation made about somebody else’s house.

How we evaluate whether this is right for you

No system on this website is appropriate for every property, and this one is no exception. The evaluation is the same short sequence every time.

  1. Understand the symptom

    What you are noticing, where, since when, and whether it affects one fixture or the whole building. This alone rules a great deal in or out.

  2. Test the water

    Measurements taken at your property. Where the question involves bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic or PFAS, that means certified laboratory analysis rather than a field kit, because those cannot be measured reliably in a kitchen.

  3. Check the practical constraints

    Available space, incoming pipe size, water pressure, a drain for backwash or reject water where the technology needs one, power, and how many fixtures might run at once. These decide what will physically work.

  4. Recommend against the numbers

    The specification follows from your results. If the results do not support this system, we will say so.

The number that decides everything

pH. Several oxidising media have a minimum working pH, and manganese generally needs a higher one than iron. Installing an iron filter into water below its range is the single most common reason these systems underperform — and it is entirely avoidable with a five-dollar measurement.

Installation

NWA Water Pros specifies and supplies your system. Installation is performed by an independent licensed plumbing contractor.

We test your water, recommend a system, and supply the equipment. The physical plumbing installation is completed by an independent plumbing contractor who is separately licensed by the State of Arkansas and carries their own insurance. We coordinate the schedule and stay involved through startup and testing, but the installing contractor is responsible for the plumbing work and warrants their own labor.

Iron filters backwash, so they need a drain that can take the flow — backwash rates are higher than people expect and an undersized drain causes real problems. They go ahead of any softener, always.

Permits and code

Plumbing work in Arkansas is regulated, and connecting treatment equipment to a potable supply has to be done to code — including backflow protection and a properly configured air gap on any drain connection. Ask whoever installs your system, whether that is us or anyone else, how they are handling both.

Maintenance and replacement schedule

Backwashing handles routine cleaning. Media life varies enormously by type and by iron load, and the manufacturer's guidance for the specific medium is what governs.

These are typical intervals for this category of equipment. The actual schedule for your system comes from the manufacturer’s documentation and from your own water conditions — heavier loading means shorter intervals. We will not promise a replacement interval for a product we have not specified against your test results.

Certifications and performance claims

Iron and manganese are regulated as secondary contaminants by the EPA — the standards exist for aesthetic reasons such as taste, colour and staining rather than health. The secondary guideline is 0.3 mg/L for iron and 0.05 mg/L for manganese, which is roughly where staining starts.

Product certification for iron reduction exists under NSF/ANSI 42 for some systems. NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 apply to materials. Media performance is more often supported by manufacturer data at defined conditions than by a certification listing, which makes matching the medium to your water chemistry the critical step.

How we handle contaminant-reduction claims

We will not tell you that a system removes a contaminant. We will show you what a specific model is certified to reduce, and under which standard. Certification is granted for named substances tested under a defined protocol — a product certified for chlorine taste and odour has demonstrated nothing about lead, and a product certified for lead has demonstrated nothing about PFAS unless the listing says so.

Ask any company for the performance data sheet for the exact model they are quoting. If they cannot produce one, that tells you something.

What affects the cost

We do not publish prices for this on the website, and we want to explain why rather than just leaving a gap. A number quoted before anyone has seen your water or your utility room is a guess, and guesses in this industry are usually optimistic in the brochure and corrected upward on the day. These are the factors that genuinely move the figure:

  • Iron and manganese concentrations, which drive media choice and sizing
  • Whether pH correction is needed ahead of the filter
  • Air injection versus chemical oxidation
  • Whether iron bacteria are present, which adds disinfection
  • Drain capacity at the location, since backwash rates are high
  • Tank sizing for peak flow
  • Media replacement cost and interval

Frequently asked questions

Why did my iron filter stop working?

The usual causes are pH drifting below the medium's working range, media reaching the end of its life, a failed air draw on an air-injection system, or iron bacteria fouling the bed. A treated-water test plus a look at the backwash tells you which.

Can a water softener handle my iron?

Only within the manufacturer's stated limit, which is lower than most people assume. Above it, iron coats the resin and destroys capacity. On well water with meaningful iron, an iron filter goes ahead of the softener.

What is the reddish slime in my toilet tank?

Iron bacteria. They foul filters and equipment aggressively, and treatment usually starts with shock chlorinating the well and plumbing rather than adding filtration.

My stains are black rather than orange.

That points to manganese. It is common alongside iron here, oxidises less readily, and generally needs a higher pH to treat effectively. A test measures both so the medium can be matched to the pair.

Will an iron filter help the rotten-egg smell?

Often yes, because hydrogen sulfide and iron frequently occur together and some oxidising systems address both. Whether one system covers it depends on the sulfide concentration, which is why it gets measured.
