How the technology works
Reverse osmosis faults
Slow flow at the faucet is most often a storage tank that has lost its air pre-charge — checkable and adjustable, and frequently misdiagnosed as a failed membrane. Other causes are clogged pre-filters, a fouled membrane, or low incoming pressure.
Continuous drain flow usually points at a failed automatic shut-off valve or check valve.
Poor water quality from an RO means the membrane, and usually means the carbon pre-filter was neglected and chlorine reached it.
UV faults
Lamp failure, ballast or controller failure, a fouled quartz sleeve, or a failed UV sensor. The dangerous case is a lamp that still glows while delivering an inadequate dose, which no visual check will reveal.
Whole-house and well system faults
Control valve failures, blocked drain lines, media that has exhausted or channelled, failed air draws on air-injection iron filters, and neutralizer media that has simply run out. Pressure loss across the system usually points at a clogged sediment stage or compacted media.
Leaks
Housings, O-rings and push-fit fittings are the usual sources. Under-sink RO leaks are the ones that cause real damage, because nobody looks in that cabinet for months.

Certifications and performance claims
Repairs restore existing equipment. Where components are replaced in a system carrying a certification — an RO membrane in a system certified under NSF/ANSI 58, or a lamp in a UV system certified under NSF/ANSI 55 — the replacement should be the certified equivalent, or the system’s performance claim no longer stands.
