Chlorine Taste and Smell in Northwest Arkansas Tap Water

If your tap water tastes or smells like a swimming pool, you are noticing the disinfectant that makes it safe to drink. Public water systems are required to carry a disinfectant residual all the way to your tap, and that residual is doing real work: it is what keeps the water from picking up microbiological contamination on its journey through miles of distribution main to your kitchen.

So this is not a safety problem. It is an enjoyment problem, and it is one of the most common reasons people in Fayetteville, Rogers, Bentonville and Springdale stop drinking their tap water and start buying it by the case.

Common symptoms

Potential causes

The disinfectant residual itself

Chlorine or chloramine is added deliberately and is supposed to be there. The amount is regulated, but the level that is perfectly safe is still well above the level many people can taste.

Chloramine rather than free chlorine

Some systems use chloramine, chlorine combined with ammonia, because it is more stable over long distribution runs. Chloramine is harder to remove than free chlorine and produces a slightly different, more persistent taste. This matters a great deal for equipment selection.

Seasonal treatment changes

Water utilities adjust treatment as source-water conditions change through the year. A taste that appears in July and fades in October is often this.

Your own plumbing and water heater

Hot water holds and releases odours differently from cold. A smell that is much worse in the shower than at the kitchen tap points at the hot side.

Long dead-end runs and low usage

Water that has sat in a little-used line can taste different from water at a frequently used fixture.

Partly visible, but testing gives the answer

You can confirm the presence of a disinfectant yourself: a basic chlorine test strip from a hardware store will show a residual. What a strip will not tell you is whether your system uses free chlorine or chloramine, and that distinction decides what equipment will actually work.

Questions we are asked about this

Is chlorine in my tap water dangerous?

Public water systems are required to keep disinfectant levels within limits set by the EPA, and those limits are set with lifetime exposure in mind. Water within those limits is considered safe to drink. Choosing to filter it is a preference about taste and smell, and that is a perfectly good reason. We are not going to tell you your city water is poisoning you, because that would not be true.

Will a pitcher filter fix it?

For cold drinking water at one tap, often yes — a carbon pitcher removes a good deal of free chlorine taste. What it will not do is help with the shower, which is where most people actually notice the smell, and pitcher cartridges are expensive per gallon compared with a plumbed system.

Why is the smell worse in the shower?

Heat and agitation drive dissolved gases out of water and into the air of a small enclosed room. The concentration in the water has not changed; your ability to smell it has.

Does boiling remove chlorine?

Boiling drives off a good portion of free chlorine, which is why some people notice boiled water tastes better. It is not practical as a household water supply, and it does not work the same way on chloramine.

How do I find out if my city uses chloramine?

Check the annual Consumer Confidence Report from your water utility, which is published every year and states the disinfectant in use. If you cannot find it, we will look it up for your address.
